Garbage is an alternative / modern rock band from Madison, Wisconsin, Usa. The group was formed in 1994 by producers Butch Vig, Steve Marker, and musician Duke Erikson. The trio had previously worked together at Smart Studios, a recording studio they founded in the early 1980s. Before Garbage, Vig and Erikson had been part of the band Fire Town, with Marker serving as their roadie. In the mid-1990s, Vig, Marker, and Erikson began experimenting with electronic/rock mixes for artists like Nine Inch Nails and House Of Pain. They then set out to form a band that would incorporate this remix approach, and recruited Scottish singer Shirley Manson after discovering her through Angelfish's music on Mtv. All four members of Garbage are involved in songwriting and production, blending genres such as alternative rock, alternative dance, industrial rock, post-grunge, and trip hop to create their unique sound.
