Anthrax is een thrashmetalband uit New York City, New York, Verenigde Staten, opgericht door Scott Ian en Danny Lilker in 1981. Oorspronkelijk speelden de twee gitaar, maar na enkele lineupwijzigingen stapte Lilker over naar basgitaar. De vroege jaren werden gekenmerkt door veel personeelswisselingen voordat het bandlid solidificeerde met Ian, Lilker, Neil Turbin (zang), Dan Spitz (gitaar) en Charlie Benante (drums) in 1983. Deze opstelling nam hun eerste lp "Fistful Of Metal" op in 1984, gevolgd door een reeks uitgaven met Joey Belladonna als zanger van 1985 tot 1991. Tijdens deze periode bereikte de band wereldwijde success, waardoor zij één van de bestverkopende thrashmetalbands werden. Anthrax experimenteerde ook met rap en metal op nummers zoals "I'm The Man" en collaborateerde met Public Enemy in 1991.
