Public Image Ltd are an English post-punk band formed by lead vocalist John Lydon, guitarist Keith Levene, bassist Jah Wobble, and drummer Jim Walker in June 1978. As the sole constant member, Lydon has navigated various lineup changes throughout the years. Following his departure from the Sex Pistols in January 1978, Lydon sought a more experimental "anti-rock" project, resulting in PiL's debut studio album First Issue (1978). The band's sound, characterized by abrasive bass-heavy rhythms and influences from dub, noise, progressive rock, and disco, gained traction with their second studio album Metal Box (1979), often regarded as one of the most important albums of the post-punk era. As the group evolved, Levene, Wobble, and Walker departed, allowing Lydon to explore a more accessible sound on This Is What You Want... This Is What You Get (1984) and Album (1986). After a late 1990s hiatus, Lydon reformed PiL in 2009, releasing several further albums, including What the World Needs Now... (2015). With a rich history spanning over four decades, Public Image Ltd remains an iconic force in alternative rock.
