The Cult is an English rock band formed in Bradford in 1983. Before settling on their current name in January 1984, the band had performed under the name Death Cult, which was an evolution of the name of lead vocalist Ian Astbury's previous band Southern Death Cult. With a genre-spanning sound that blends hard rock, post-punk, alternative rock, gothic rock, and classic rock, The Cult has built a devoted following across the UK and beyond. They gained momentum in the mid-1980s as a post-punk and gothic rock band, with singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary", before breaking into the mainstream in the late 1980s as a hard rock band with hits like "Love Removal Machine". The longest-serving members of the band are Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, who are also their primary songwriters. Over the years, The Cult has released several successful albums, including Dreamtime (1984), Love (1985), Electric (1987), and more, with each one showcasing their unique sound and style.
